BSA's Exploring Program - Helping Develop the Next Scuba Pros
Do you know much about Exploring in the Boy Scouts of America's total programs?
It is a program that is career-oriented. While Scout Troops and Venture Crews may involve Scuba, an Explorer Post that is Scuba oriented will be mostly Scuba in its activities. Visit them here.
Cutting to the chase, learn more about Exploring to see if your shop might want to sponsor a Scuba oriented Post. Why? Because this is a group of youth with friends and family that can be good dive customers for instruction, gear, and travel. Also, since it is career-oriented, the instruction may very well extend into Pro levels after aging up. You can provide a very strong base set of skills that sets them up for you providing them with a successful IDC experience. As a matter of fact, maybe that is the accepted goal of membership: Pass the IDC.
What is expected of you as a Sponsor? There is little "required", but you should want to do the right things. These can be pretty easy! Basically, find ways for the Post members to learn what it is like to work in the dive industry. Show them how running a shop works. What equipment repair is. Marketing to get new customers. Putting travel together. Instruction. Get them diving. Do lots of pool time in both learning and games. Buoyancy perfection. Teach them DM level academics and skills so they can be a Pro right after 18. Have non-dive events as well.
Let me know if I can explain this a bit better. Get to know your Explorer professional support at your local BSA Council.
